Annapolis Alderman Proposes Total Smoking Ban In Local Bars and Restaurants

With Anne Arundel County now moving quickly ahead with a smoking ban in county bars and restaurants, Alderman Sam Shropshire (Dem / Ward 7) is proposing that the City of Annapolis immediately move forward with its own total smoking ban in public restaurants and bars.

“While there’s significant evidence indicating that even nonsmokers are adversely affected by environmental cigarette smoke, it’s way past time for the City to act.”  Shropshire says he wants to make certain that the County and City will both proceed jointly in the right direction—“protecting the health of our citizens while significantly lowering healthcare costs.”

Alderman Shropshire says his legislation has the support of nonsmokers and smokers alike.

On a recent evening Shropshire spoke to ten men and women who were smoking in a local bar.  He asked them how they would react to a total smoking ban.  “To my surprise all encouraged me to move ahead with this legislation,” he said.

The legislation will be on the agenda for introduction at the City Council meeting on Monday, February 12th.  Shropshire says he expects little, if any, resistance to the measure.
