KIDS IN TROUBLE - While other countries cope with natural disaster, we cope with youth crime.

Two high school students were recently involved in violent crime - one was killed in Robinwood and the other, a 15-year-old, has been charged with attempted murder.

Murder is bad enough, but in the hands of teenagers it is even more depressing.

City leaders are responding with a program, Kids of Hope, which brings mentors into the community to recognize a troubled youngster's attributes. Many of these kids will turn to a life of crime if there isn't an adult to steer them in the right direction.

Members of the clergy, the African-American community and the police are offering to provide the positive influences these children need. A workshop will be held for volunteers in August.

This may not stop the murders, but it is an important step to deterring teenagers from a life of crime.

We applaud Alderman Sam Shropshire, who organized the meeting, and Mayor Ellen Moyer for her support.
